English as a Second Language (ESL)

English as a Second Language Program

The goal of our English as a Second Language (ESL) program is to enable emergent bilingual students for whom ESL is the appropriate program, to become competent in the comprehension, speaking, reading and writing of the English language through the integrated use of second language methods.  The ESL program will emphasize the mastery of English language skills, as well as the content areas of mathematics, science and social studies. All, as integral parts of the academic goals for all students, allowing emergent bilingual children to participate equitably in school.  The basic curriculum content of this program follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), as required by the state.

Goliad ISD implements an ESL pull-out program.  The student is served by a certified ESL teacher through English language arts and reading. The student remains in a mainstream instructional arrangement in the remaining content areas in which they are provided sheltered instruction. The student is provided English language development through academic content instruction that is linguistically and culturally responsive in English language arts and reading. Goliad ISD shall accommodate the instruction, pacing, and materials to ensure that English learners have a full opportunity to master the essential knowledge and skills of the required curriculum.
